You’ll also need some super glue to help hold the weight in place. After you’ve drilled into the die, you can smear some of this glue over each hole to make sure it holds the weight properly.
Next, you’ll need to paint over the weight to make it look authentic. The best color to use is India ink. This will allow you to get a very uniform color on the dice and keep it from looking too different. It’s also a good idea to use a new, fine-tipped brush and make sure you maintain a sharp point throughout the entire process.
After you’ve painted over the weight, you can sand down any rough spots to smooth out the surface of the die and make it appear more realistic. The sanding can be done with either coarse or fine sandpaper, depending on your preference. The sandpaper will not only give the gimmicked spot a more realistic look, it will also help it roll better and stay on its side longer.
You can also heat the die to make it soften slightly, which will change its shape a bit. The temperature shouldn’t be too hot, but it should still soften the plastic a bit so that you can insert the weight into it. You can even microwave it if you want to, but be careful because this can warp the plastic and cause it to look very strange.
Another great option is to buy a set of weighted dice already built for you. These dice come with a variety of inserts that can be loaded to change the odds on a roll. Some of them include a square flat lead insert, which is positioned below one face; an edge loaded die, which has two wedge-shaped lead inserts positioned below the edge; and a corner loaded dice, which has a pyramid-shaped lead insert positioned below the corner.
Using a weighted dice is a great way to improve your game without having to spend a lot of money on custom-made ones. But be aware that the process can be difficult to complete in your home.
